Had a great vacation visiting the family up north! Good movies, great food and lovely nature walks šŸ’– I'm full of inspiration and creative energy 🄰

Nightmare mode is still active at work until May, but I only work Wednesday to Friday this week and Monday to Wednesday next week, due to national holidays and extra vacation days (because of So Much Overtime). Going to try and still get not-work done in the next three days, for the sake of my mental health.

Here's a quick to-do list for myself this week, so I don't Just Work
[ ] Try out the new outlining technique on a new writing project, to see if it's the thing for me
[ ] Gush about writing projects, because that's fun 😁
[ ] Do a basic clean-up of the apartment 'cause it's rather chaos right now
[ ] Set up a food plan for the coming weeks so I can save some money on groceries
[ ] Set up a "game plan" about my literal video games šŸ˜†
[ ] Go to the LARP planning meeting on Sunday
[ ] Go through "stuff" both digitally and physically to see what I should put on my future to-do lists...

[personal profile] kingstoken's 2025 Book Bingo: Free Space - Indigenous Author

A Two-Spirit Journey: The Autobiography of a Lesbian Ojibwa-Cree Elder by Ma-Nee Chacaby with Mary Louisa Plummer is a 2016 autobiography that covers writer/activist/artist Ma-Nee Chacaby's life from 1950 to 2014, from her birth in a tuberculosis sanatorium, to her childhood in Ombabika, through her adulthood in Thunder Bay where she's become a community elder and helped lead the city's first Pride parade.

This was the fifth of this year's Canada Reads nominees that I've read, and I saved it for last, feeling like it was a sure thing in terms of something I'd want to read. I wasn't wrong, and I was happy to see it win in the debates, championed by Shayla Stonechild.

The book is very candid, frank, and factually self-reflective, with a conversational tone that feels like sitting in on the friendly interviews that brought these stories forward. The author has lived through a lot of violence, as well as discrimination, addiction, disability and economic hardship. She is also someone who loves truly and deeply, gathers family, and builds community in a way that I really needed to read about right now.

I also really appreciated the book's afterword, which provides a lot of transparency on the writing process, which was assisted by social scientist and friend Mary Louisa Plummer due to Ma-Nee Chacaby being low-vision and speaking English as a fourth language.

1. Media: I watched Point of Order, the 1963 documentary film that's just a supercut of the televised 1954 Army-McCarthy hearings. It was fascinating--more engaging than I feared, and I might even want to watch it again. Provides full context for the quote "Have you no sense of decency, sir?"

I'm starting on season three of Schitt's Creek and still fast-forwarding over some cringe interactions between the parents and the townspeople, but I really enjoy the interactions between all the family members, as well as pretty much everything the adult children do. I have nothing in common with the characters except in certain moments between the adult children and their parents that are Too Real.

2. Books: I finished The Return of the King and Beguiled, abandoned The Night Watchman, and am now reading Enlightened and A Memory Called Empire. I also recently started and finished Whale Fall by Elizabeth O'Connor, published last year and set on a Welsh island in autumn 1938 with a dwindling population and no future. It is an excellent, short, enjoyable read, and the audiobook narrator has a Welsh accent. My favorite line: "And, God have mercy, never marry." I found it via a recommendation on a librarian's website here: https://jessamyn.info/booklist

I’ve been having so much fun with that book/lists meme that has been going around, and last night I finally finished one of my own! …And then promptly went on to make a second one that same night. And then started a third one that I haven’t finished yet, whoops.

First: 100 Books That Impacted Me In Some Shape Or Form! Deliberately excluding manga/graphic novels because I feel like that could be a whole list on its own.

I spent so much time fiddling with this list, debating on what it means for a book to be impactful, where exactly the difference between ā€œimpactfulā€ and ā€œenjoyedā€ lies, and where any particular book I chose would fall on that scale… do not ask how many hours I poured into this, lol. (And then, of course, after forcing myself to stop thinking about it and just post it, I immediately thought of like 5 more books that really should have been on this list! Isn’t that how it goes.)

After making that list (and sharing it with some people), I started thinking about making a list for games I’ve played as well. Since I do much less gaming than reading, I figured I’d make it easier for myself and aim for 50 games instead. So I opened up my backloggery, began making my way through, and… ended up with 75+ games without even really trying asdfghjkl; haha.

And thus: 100 Games Beloved By Me, featuring many visual novels and indie games, because I am who I am. I had to add so many of these to the database… But also plenty of jrpgs, because, again, I am who I am and I love what I love, haha. <3

All of these are games I really enjoyed at the time I played them; I make no promises about how they hold up now.

I would really love to hear how much overlap we have on either or both of these lists! As well as any more specific thoughts you might have on the books and games featured there <3

(As mentioned above, I have started a third list—for beloved/formative manga reads—though it’s slower going due to the amount of fan translations I read as a teenager that I no longer remember titles for… If I ever do finish it, I’ll share here! Also contemplating making another list for anime… but that will also have to wait.)

Kiss Fang Weekend (a challenge event with four days of prompts for shippy fanworks about Fang) is running on Bluesky this year!

The official prompts post is here and breaks down as follows:

Thursday, May 8th: Trope Thursday - Fang in an AU or trope of the creator's choice
Friday, May 9th: Captains (and First Mate) on Vacation - Fang/anyone but Ed, Stede, or Izzy
Saturday, May 10th: Time to Kiss Fang - a free space
Sunday, May 11th: Fang in the Middle - for Fang-centred threesomes

Official fills can be posted to the #kissfangweekend tag on Bluesky, but for folks who aren't on there, I think any archive or community will only be made better with some more Fang-kissing.

Making this post now during my morning commute to promise myself that I'll write today šŸ’™

Been watching and reading a lot of good writing advice that clicked with me and I've got several projects I'm super excited to write!

Just hope to have some energy left after work, cause my April schedule is rough

Audio: How to pick up a cat like a pro - Vet advice on cat handling by [youtube.com profile] HelpfulVancouverVet

Excerpt:
Squishing is your best friend when dealing with a cat.

Look, I'm a simple creature. Overlaying vet advice about how to safely pick up a cat on a scene where my fave is distraught and struggling against being hugged is always going to bring me an outsize amount of enjoyment. The editing on this is great, making the most of a short scene without overstaying the life of the bit, and I especially love the zoom in at the end. Squish. That. Cat.
