Voice Team 2021 is over, which means it's time for another wrap-up post :-D

Looking back at what I accomplished over the last month has left me quite shocked. Time really does fly when you're having fun, and I tried so many new things during this round! I learned a lot and really enjoyed all the challenges. I can't recommend this event enough. The mod team are great and it's so well organised. Can't wait for the next Voice Team!

Team Denim Gremlins
Our team was the biggest, with fifteen members! At the very start of the event, each default team name was a randomly assigned Crayola colour name. We were initially "Sunset Orange", but after looking through the available colours, we found a denim-related one we liked. Several chaotic discussions followed and we settled on "Denim Gremlins" as our team name. Our mascot was a pair of jorts with the orange of our original name as a patch! We put together a playlist of songs about jeans, made jorts-related filks, made jorts, and... I will never be able to look at jorts in the same way again XD

Denim Gremlins also created an AO3 collection containing most of the works we made as a team for this event (some are yet to be added, so it's only going to grow!). You can find it here.

One of the first challenges we completed as a team, after name and mascot creation, was to make individual goals and boundaries for the length of the event. The following were mine.

Goals:
✔️ To involve myself more in conversations and shake off my propensity toward lurking. - While I sat out of live discussions a few times, I mostly did it!
✔️ To coordinate my Voice Team output with my general podfic goals of recording more 10+ min pods (I recorded nine), more British comedy fandoms (I recorded one podfic for The Fast Show), and to reach 100 works on AO3. (I hit this milestone on 30 May!)

Boundaries:
✔️ I requested not to be asked to edit other people's audio due to my carpal tunnel. I didn't edit any audio besides my own, though I ended up in double wrist splints most nights anyway and am still in them. I have no self control!
✔️ I said I would try not to neglect IRL commitments. I mean, I only took one day off work for Voice Team. That counts, right? XD

WORKS I CREATED

Solo works

Testing Time [Gen, Old Town Road - Lil Nas X (Music Video), 5mins]
This was recorded for the 'Wavelength' challenge of making a podfic that feels very "you". I love Lil Nas X, love stories involving time loops/travel, so this felt like the perfect story to record.

The Axiom [Teen and Up, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Data/Kivas Fajo, 13mins]
Another 'Wavelength' podfic. This awesome fic was a gift for me in last year's chocolatebox exchange, so it was already totally in my wheelhouse. I loved recording it.

Simple Signs [Gen, The Matrix (Movies), The Oracle & Morpheus, 1min]
For the 'No Make-Up' challenge in which you post an unedited work. This one was recorded in one take! We were allowed to add noise reduction filters, which I did, and it just about covered up my nervous swallow near the end, haha.

Blossom [Gen, The Fast Show, Ted/Ralph, 22mins]
For 'Mirror Image', a challenge where you find a character you have something in common with and record a podfic featuring them. I found I had a few things in common with Ralph in this story: that I enjoy gardening, like writing, and am not straight! I'd hoped to record something for this fandom for a while, and this podfic went into my Britcom Pod series too.

Quiet Places [Gen, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Ro Laren & Guinan, 9mins]
For the 'Road Less Travelled' challenge, which encouraged podfics to be recorded for characters or pairings that don't appear in AO3's top ten in the filter menu.

Always Looking Left and Right [Mature, Always Crashing in the Same Car, James Booth/Bill Mackinnon, 15mins]
This one was inspired by the 'Accept Criticism' challenge. Two of my team members were kind enough to give me private feedback on my performance. I also got one of them (Gilraina) into the fandom!

Frollo [Mature, MONTERO - Lil Nas X (Music Video) Lil Nas/Jeans Judge, 6mins]
For the challenge, 'Never Have I Ever... Until Now'. Members of my team explained how to use Audacity's 'spectral delete' tool (which I don't know how I lived without for the past year!) It helps with cutting out voice clicks, but it also lets me isolate and delete certain sounds--like my upstairs neighbour's squeaky door hinges--without cutting out any time. It's a lifesaver.

The Scientific Method [Teen and Up, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Data/Riker, 3mins]
This was made for 'The Road Less Travelled' challenge too. I love Data/Riker, and this was also a gift for me in [community profile] multifandomdrabble 2019. I can't resist a triple drabble, and this went into my triple drabble series!

Blend [Gen, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Beverly/Deanna, 16mins]
For the 'Sounds Like' challenge, where we were encouraged to create our own sound effects! As this fic is all about tea, I asked fellow Voice Team players to send me recordingss of themselves making tea for the scene breaks. I also recorded my morning coffee being poured, which got me a badge (see the badge section!) I love how this turned out. So many cups of tea were consumed while editing this!

The New Water [Teen and Up, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Beverly/Deanna, 11mins]
Another 'Sounds Like' with sounds made via my bathtub! It was tricky to get a full bath to sound like a lake, but I think the sporadic splashes and drips add something soothing to this lovely story.

Ocean Breathing Heavy [Gen, The Terror (TV), William Gibson/Cornelius Hickey, 15mins]
For 'Cover Art First', one of my favourite challenges that does what it says on the tin. Caminante made a lovely cover with painted waves and it immediately made me think of The Terror! I found this gorgeous work all about seasickness on a rocky sea, and it was the perfect fit.

Paradise [Explicit, MONTERO - Lil Nas X (Music Video), Lil Nas X/Satan, 11mins]
I had wanted to record the third in yeaka's MONTERO trilogy, but I was a tad nervous about recording something this explicit. Once again, Voice Team has me trying new things! This was for their challenge, 'What Comes Next?' all about sequels.

Multivoices

Among the Glaciers... [Mature, The Terror (TV), Crozier/Jopson, 21mins]
For the 'Rope Them In' challenge I roped in my fandom bestie [personal profile] saturni_stellis to read Crozier's lines in this podfic. She asked me for direction too, which was also an interesting experience.

Rare Bloom [Gen, Independence Day (Movies), Brackish/Milton, 9mins]
Created for 'Pitch 'n' Pod' where I pitched this fandom and pairing to my team, then organised a multivoice with those who were sold on it! This is one of my fics, and I was so excited when CompassRose and olive2read sent me their lines - their performances are amazing.

Upgrades [Gen, Original, Robot Repairpreson/Robot Getting ASMR While Being Repaired, 19mins)
Inspired by the 'Sounds Like' challenge. It had already come up in Never Have I Ever that our team hadn't recorded something specifically intended for ASMR listeners. This story is about a robot experiencing ASMR while being repaired and we recorded every sound effect mentioned in the original text. This is the biggest project I've organised/edited and I'm really happy with how it turned out. The sound effects my team produced are fantastic and the voice acting for the characters is just lovely.

Unfamiliar, Horrible Infamy [Gen, The Avengers, Steve/Tony, 30mins all readings]
A member of my team coded a neural net to write Steve/Tony fanfiction, training it on a 102k fic with remix permissions. The result was a garbled yet hilarious mess of ten drabbles, which myself and other members of my team then read in complete seriousness. The mildly terrifying cover image was made with Deep Dream Generator, another crossover between humans and AI. I absolutely love how this turned out.

Heartless: A found poem of podfic titles [Gen, Original work, Robot & Roboticist, 3mins]
I don't think I've ever spent this long on a podfic this short XD. This one is for 'Weird Science' - a challenge for editing clips from other podfics together. A member of my team ([personal profile] semperfiona) threw out the idea of stitching podfic titles together to create a poem, and I ran with it! I collected tonnes of podfic titles, resulting in 44k of just titles in one document to sift through. I had no idea what the poem would be about when I started, (initially, it was going to be a love letter) but it kept shifting until it became a robot's POV and, eventually, became this poem. I'm over the moon with how it turned out and editing together 65 podfics taught me a lot about volume control.

Buzzfeed Presents: Thirst Tweets with Richie Tozier [Teen and Up, IT (Movies), Eddie/Richie, 7mins]
An amazing podvid (podfic with video elements) made by greedy_dancer and featuring the voices of myself and two other Denim Gremlins :-D The editing of the video is so fun.

Looking for the Next Dream [Critical Role] - I played Veth/Nott in this multivoice put together by UnholyCrowley. This was for the 'Never Have I Ever' challenge, and my NHIE was that I'd never recorded anything for Critical Role.

WORKS I MADE COVERS FOR

But Have You Got the Touch?, Venom (Movie 2018), Explicit, by greedy_dancer
A discussion was had about the arty angle of the lines symbolising the soundwaves of Venom and Eddie's voices versus me thinking "pink for tongue, white for eyes" XD

[Filk] Gentians Bloom in Gusu, MDZU, Teen and Up, by [personal profile] semperfiona
I'll jump at the chance to edit anything to do with flowers, and this filk got stuck in my head for hours!

[Filk] Unsink My Ship, Multi-fandom, Gen, by greedy_dancer
Weighing my fridge letters down in my bath with Blu-Tac (the bottom S is desperately trying to float away in the photo) was not how I thought I'd be spending that morning, but I'm so pleased with how it came out. My flatmate walking in and being like, um, what?! was also an interesting experience.

Upgrades, Original Work, Gen, a Denim Gremlins multivoice
I discuss this ASMR-inspired podfic above. As this isn't your usual podfic, I decided to make a non-moodboard cover for it. I've only done this once before (for a non-fiction meta I recorded.) This cover inspired a meme on the server (here) which delights me to this day.

BADGES

New for this year's Voice Team were badges for certain achievements. They're all so pretty. The entire collection of 25 can be found here. These are the badges I grabbed over the course of the month with explanations below.

Badges:
  • Created over 100 minutes of audio for Voiceteam
  • Created a work for a fandom with 0 podfics on AO3 at the start of Voiceteam
  • Wrote/recorded/edited in a new location - my friend's table!
  • Completed at least one challenge from each round with a fanwork that centers a BIPOC character
  • Completed at least two challenges from each round
  • Used part of my morning routine or evening routine in a Voiceteam project - recording SFX of me pouring coffee
  • Made a collaboration with someone I hadn’t worked with before Voiceteam
  • Created a work for a fandom I didn’t know before Voiceteam
  • Worked in a new medium - poetry!
  • Completed at least 10 Voiceteam challenges total
  • Learned a new word (in a language I speak or don’t) during Voiceteam - so many sailing terms (The Terror pod)
  • Got another Voiceteam player into a fandom they didn’t know before Voiceteam

PODFIC PLAYTIME

One of the challenges was to create and/or playtest a podfic game, and I ended up playing so many :-) I also created one, which unexpectedly had the most participants in a single project in Voice Team history! (60, which is almost half this year's participants.) That game was...

The Podfic Cover Jigsaw Puzzle!
This came about because I was trying to think of how I could complete the 'Bring Your Work to Fandom Day' challenge. Hobbies counted, and I love doing jigsaw puzzles. I also love doing jigsaw puzzles while listening to podfic, so the crossover was already there right before my eyes. I ended up putting out a call to podficcers to send me one podfic cover they'd made so I could put them all into a puzzle design. I received 37! I then hosted the design online so my fellow podficcers could complete it and I could track who played. Over Voice Team, it was played 94 times. If you'd like to play it, you can find it here!

A meme was made about the puzzle. How good is this XD

Podfic Against Humanity
A custom deck of Cards Against Humanity cards were created with input from lots of podficcers and put together by my teammate, elrohir. We then played a game of it online, with hilarious results! If you'd like to play with this deck, the prompts and responses are all available here at allbad.cards!

Tongue Twisters
A bunch of us recorded ourselves saying popular tongue twisters as quickly as we could, with a leaderboard of the fastest times. I failed miserably, but it was a fun challenge.

Podfic Exquisite Corpse
This podfic was created line by line, with 38 podficcers only knowing the line before theirs and adding a new one to the chain. You can find it here. It's such a fun, chaotic listen!

MISC.

Podfic Cover Icons
For 'Bring Your Work to Fandom Day', I combined my hobby of making icons with podfic! You may have already seen the post, here. I made one icon per moodboard-style podfic cover I've made, then arranged all 85 of them by colour. Doing this taught me a new Photoshop skill, because cropping a perfect square from one image was trickier than I thought when every pixel counts! If anyone would like to use any of them, please do go ahead and grab.

Comment Challenges
There were lots of podfic commenting challenges, which I love. 'Friend!' involving commenting on a teammate's podfic. 'I See You' was for commenting on podfic with no comments. My favourite was 'Fate', in which you look through the main Podfic tag on AO3 and use a random number generator to find podfics to comment on. I found some cool pods I might not have listened to otherwise with this challenge and stumbled across a few familiar faces too! Thanks to these challenges, I listened to 30 podfics and left 30 comments. Woohoo!

Gifts For Me!
For the challenge 'Wishing Well', we were allowed to post one fannish wish in the Discord's Wishing Well channel. My wish was for more triple drabbles to listen to. Semperfiona recorded a podfic for Knives Out for me. I'm going to watch this film very soon just so I can listen :-D

Remixes
As part of the 'Weird Science' challenge, my voice was used in this clever Good Omens audio puzzle!

And that's just about everything! I'm pretty exhausted after this month of podfic fun, though I'm eager to get started on the podfics on my to-read list for exchanges I've signed up to. June will probably be much quieter for me in terms of output while I rest my hands (and move house!) Thanks for reading this if you did :-D
