Out of the Auditary Roundup
Mar. 30th, 2021 08:01 pmThe Out of the Auditary 2021 collection is live and is the biggest since it started! That's 45 awesome podfics of works that don't fit the standard fanfiction format ;-D
I ended up enjoying this fest more than I anticipated. There was something about celebrating the unusual that made me want to step outside my comfort zone in almost every respect. I asked for permission to record via Twitter (something I've never done before). I included background music (again, something I've never tried.) I added voice filters, sound effects, gifs on covers, and now I'm thinking... I should be doing this all the time! XD
I made three pods, each a different original format, and I've shared some rambly thoughts about them below. I also took part in a multivoice podfic arranged via the Podfichat Discord.
LCARS: USS Pasteur Federation Database Scan 17-339789, Star Trek: TNG
It was a last minute idea to edit this to sound like a Trek computer reading to the listener, but I'm so glad I tried it. It comes complete with LCARS noises and Enterprise ambient engine noise. Owing to the background noise, I checked how it sounded through my Apple earbuds and... wow. I never expected my stuff to sound so different through different headphones. I listened to some of my other pods through them too, and my voice sounded so strange to me! I ended up testing this pod through six different audio sources (headphones and speakers) and it sounded good in all apart from the Apple headphones, where the background noise was a little bit too loud imo. It was an interesting experiment.
A collection of letters as were exchanged ’twixt King Edward and his favourite Gaveston, Edward II
This was one of the very first (if not the first) podfics I added to my "to-pod" list. I remember thinking it was too much to take on for my first pod. I was nervous about the old-timey language, how I'd differentiate between the two characters, the length. Everything about it intimidated me! Well, Out of the Auditary was my time to shine :-D I'm a much more confident podficcer now, and I think it turned out really well. It took me almost a year, but I finally got this one recorded and I'm happy.
Refraction, 17776: What Football Will Look Like in the Future
This was perhaps my favourite. Again, this fic is one I've been eyeing to pod for a while. I was so stuck on how to record it, as it's dialogue-only, in a fandom where characters talk through text alone, with different font colours indicating who's speaking. Writers in this fandom play around with that a lot on AO3, and it's all very clever... but how do you pod that when you're not confident with character voices? I considered a multivoice, but in all honestly, I don't think I could've edited it well. I thought about making the voices come from the left, right, or both speakers in a stereo recording. But when I started playing around with filters, I found the answer! I love how it turned out.
American Notes on British Baking, Red White & Royal Blue
I've participated in few multivoice pods, and never one organised through the Podfichat Discord, but when I saw roles in this story being advertised, I had to go for it. I don't know the fandom, though stories involving food are always up my alley. I play Henry, and the rest of the cast did an amazing job. It's also super well edited, too. I really enjoyed the experience and listening!
Ahead to April
Podfic Appreciation Fest is on the horizon, starting 1 April. I'm hoping to post a rec list for every podfic-specific collection/event/fest I've participated in since I started podding (almost a year ago now, ahh!) I'm aiming for 50 points total, though I have no idea if that goal will be easy or difficult to reach - I'll need to wait and see how points are distributed.
Also coming are assignments for
jukebox_fest,
remixapod will publish the list of pods up for remixing (I don't know enough of the canons to sign up officially, but I'm hoping there'll be something I can work on as a treat!), and
unconventionalfanworkex has already opened nominations!
After that... maybe I'll give myself some resting time before
voiceteam comes back for a full round in May. (It's been confirmed. It's happening! And this will be my first time taking part in a full round!!)
