Snowflake Challenges 9, 12, & 13

snowflake_challenge post where I'm catching up :-D
I’ve skipped those challenges I didn’t feel like completing. Thank you for checking this post out.
Challenge #9: Tell us things you've done that you're proud of
This is an ideal challenge for me right now. I'm hoping to offer podfic in the upcoming
fandomtrumpshate charity auction and was thinking of linking potential bidders to what I feel are my "best" podfics as examples of my work. I've never really given much thought to why I might prefer some of my podfics to others, so this was an interesting experiment!
I've chosen my top three podfics (I was going to choose five, but found it quite tricky not to nit-pick all my works while looking through them) and talk about why I'm proud of them below. They're in no particular order.
Podfic: An Improving Occupation [Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke, by verecunda
This has been one of my favourite stories since forever and was actually a fill for a kinkmeme prompt I posted in 2016. Knowing the author's style (I'm a big fan) and the story so well from multiple re-reads, I felt confident about recording it, and I think it shows. I also had loads of fun talking into a teapot for relevant parts of it, which changed my voice and added a fun element to this already cracky story. I'm really proud of this one!
Podfic: Where We Start From [Star Trek: The Next Generation, Data & Lore] by ImpishTubist
Another story I'd read multiple times and adored for a long time. It took a little while for the author to see my message asking them for permission, and in that time I'd given a lot of thought to what I could do with it. It's my only podfic with background music throughout (though it's more ambient sounds than music) and thanks to an inspiring
podfic_bingo square, has a period of silence associated with what's happening in the story. I also used a completely different mic setup for this one, which I talk about at the above link. I think this one might be my best podfic.
Podfic: Wait It Out [Reservoir Dogs, Orange/White] by LightDescending
I love stories set during thunderstorms. Two months before I recorded this, I was gifted a beautiful podfic of one of my stories featuring a thunderstorm. The podficcer included storm and rain sounds throughout the scene, and I just adored it. This story gave me the opportunity to try the same thing, and I think the added sounds really add something to the fic's already wonderful atmosphere. I really liked how this one turned out.
So, the theme here seems to be works/fandoms I'm very familiar with, and sound effects. Something to try more in 2021!
Challenge #12: Resurrect an old meme.
The ‘Nearest Book’ meme was one Snowflake suggested, and I can never resist these types of memes.
Here are the instructions if you'd like to give it a go:
Challenge #13: Tell us about 3 fandom resources you use or enjoy.
Here are three podfic resources :-)
ONE: Podfichat Discord
A great place for meeting/chatting with podficcers and keeping an eye on what’s happening in the podfic community. The Discord is welcoming of just about anyone who enjoys podfic as a medium: those interesting in podficcing who haven’t started yet, listeners/supporters, and newbie to experienced creators. Since I’ve been a (lurking) member, I’ve been inspired to try new recording setups, found and participated in new events, learned about fellow podficcer’s processes, saved and shared brilliant resources, and felt more a part of the community.
Here’s an invite link if you’re interested.
TWO: Podfic Calendar
Keep missing out on new podfic events and challenges? You need to follow
podfic_calendar! It works the same as
fandomcalendar with a focus on challenges that are inclusive of or specifically created for podfic. I’ve found out about some cool things I wouldn’t have otherwise thanks to this comm. I was also encouraged to share my AO3 collection for the first podfics in a fandom there, Pioneer Podfic. My main reason for creating it was to encourage podficcers (and those new to podfic) to record things for small fandoms and fandoms without existing podfic. There will be someone out there who wants to listen. Your podfic will be loved! Check it out and add your works if you feel comfortable :-)
THREE: Voice Team Resources
As part of the last
voiceteam event (called Voice Team Mystery Box), one of the challenges was to create a resource for anything to do with podfic. The challenge was called ‘Document It’ and so many cool things were documented and shared. Inspired by this challenge, I posted two tutorials to my journal, one for editing in Premiere Pro, and one for making moodboard-style podfic covers. You can find them at my #resources tag.
My teammate LenaLawlipop compiled a list of all the resources created for various challenges, which I’m borrowing from and sharing. Here are some of my favourite resources from those made by Voice Team Mystery Box players this year:
Podfic: A Resource Index
An index where multiple resources for podfic creation are linked and divided in categories.
Breathing while reading
An essay on how to identify comfortable places to breathe while you’re reading out loud.
Identifying flash players in your AO3 works
“Last month in preparation for the death of the flash player, I embarked on a project to write a script that will search through all my AO3 works, check for the code that uses the flash player, pull out the actual mp3 link, and put the link in the new html5 code for me to update.”
How to Podfic from your phone
“So, you want to podfic, but all you have on you is your phone. Oh no! Whatever shall you do? Well, if you follow this tutorial, you should end up with a file you can upload to whatever hosting platform you normally use.”
Thank you for reading :-)

Challenge #12: Resurrect an old meme.
The ‘Nearest Book’ meme was one Snowflake suggested, and I can never resist these types of memes.
Here are the instructions if you'd like to give it a go:
1. Grab the nearest book
2. Open the book to page 123
3. Find the fifth sentence
4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences along with these instructions
5. Don’t you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi was on my bedside table next to me.
The lines are: “In fact, you could say that the coffee picked the customers. Just as with his butter, Nagare enjoyed watching customers take pleasure in the aroma. As he watched, his eyes narrowed even further.”
I love it. And I want coffee now...
