Snowflake Challenge - 9 Fanwork Recs
Feb. 8th, 2022 04:43 pmFor the
snowflake_challenge prompt: Rec a fanwork you didn't create.
I thought I'd look through my gifts and bookmarks from 2021 for these, though I'm limiting myself to three recs per theme to stop this post becoming long, long, long! I feel it's worth mentioning that I cherish any gift created for me. Rest assured, if you’ve created something for one of my beloved fandoms or ships, it’s super special to me <3
The fandoms are: Fawlty Towers, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Star Trek: TNG, Black Mirror, and The Terror (TV).
Three gifts I’ve received (at my fic AO3)
It was hard to whittle down the amazing gifts I received in 2021 to just three. To make it easier, and to narrow the field, I've focused on works for British Comedy fandoms. (They need more love!)
Fawlty Towers
A Man is a Man, Mrs Fawlty! [Gen, 300 words, Miss Gatsby & Miss Tibbs] Gifted in
fandomtrees
I love fics focusing on background characters, and this one manages to flesh out the ladies in the small space of a triple drabble quite brilliantly. The relationship the author gives the pair is wonderful. I love how their life choices led them to live out their later years in a crummy hotel in Torquay and it’s exactly what they wanted. It’s beautiful!
Monty Python’s Flying Circus
The Long View [Gen, 300 words, Crossover with 17776: What Football Will Look Like in the Future] Gifted in
multifandomdrabble
I still can’t quite believe someone ran with this premise, and it's so good. The 5-minute Python sketch for this one is the Olympic Hide & Seek Final (it's on Netflix: s03e09 The Nude Organist, and also here on Dailymotion) where nobody seems to age and the ways characters pass the time fits right into the world of 17776. The dialogue is perfect and this work is a wonderfully in-character look at another game immortal humans play in this distant future. It’s fun, touching, another triple drabble that makes every word count, and I adore it.
Safe Passage [Gen, 300 words, Scotsman on a Horse/Betrothed Scotsman] Gifted in
multifandomdrabble
Another triple drabble(!) for a one-minute fandom. The Python sketch in its entirety is here (starts 35 seconds in.) I’m a sucker for crack taken seriously, so the amount of works that exist for the Scotsman on a Horse/Betrothed Scotsman pairing on AO3 fills my heart with joy and this one is no exception. Their first meeting! The clan rivalry! The sweetest little Michael Palin character ever! It’s a treat.
Three gifts I’ve received (at my podfic AO3)
Again, hard to narrow to three from a great selection of goodies. Here are two podfics and a fic!
[Podfic] On the Great Efficacy of Gingerbread [Gen, 11mins, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell] Gifted during
voiceteam
If you’ve never listened to CompassRose’s podfics, you’re in for a treat. This one is a particularly sugary and delicious treat and CompassRose’s narration fits perfectly into this time period and canon. I almost feel like I’m sitting beside Mr Norrell’s fire listening to them read aloud from an old magical tome. Lovely!
[Podfic] Telekon [Teen, 32mins, Star Trek: TNG] Gifted during
pod_o_ween
I am somehow lucky enough to have been the recipient of two Star Trek: TNG gifts from
godoflaundrybaskets as part of Pod-O-Ween! <3 I'll never be over their strong, gripping narration. It works so well for darker stories like these.
[Fic] Retribution [Explicit, 3.1k, Black Mirror] Gifted during
battleshipex
Dark, dark smut from one of my favourite smut writers! Ictus builds the tension and pulls you in so you cannot look away (or even breathe) for some parts of this gorgeous piece of twisted sci-fi non-con.
Three Recs from my Bookmarks
Works that were published or bookmarked by me in 2021 :-)
The Terror (TV)
The Thorough Physician [Explicit, 2.4k, Alexander McDonald/Harry Goodsir]
If you’re into medical kink, this fic will blow your stethoscope right out of your ears. Both the anatomical detail and Goodsir’s POV is enthralling. I’ve read this many times over and always find something new to enjoy about it.
Ties and Bonds [Mature, 2.7k, Henry Collins/Harry Goodsir]
Characters getting stitched up by a love interest is literally my most favourite trope ever, so my eyes almost fell out from just the summary of this. It exceeded my expectations for a fic about a scared patient because it treats the scene with such realism yet also gets super sexy with it, heeee.
Monty Python’s Flying Circus
What Comes of It (Call It Due) [Explicit, 4.5k, Scotsman on a Horse/Betrothed Scotsman]
Hey, it’s that pairing again--if you read these out of order, check the last rec in my ‘three gifts for my fic AO3’ section for a link to watch the canon. This is one of those stories you read super slowly because you never want it to end. Such fascinating depth for such tiny characters (the canon doesn’t even have dialogue!) and such a wonderful story with two unique character personalities. It’s a delight.
