On the last day of each month, I'm hoping to make a monthly recs post for podfic I've listened to in that month. Ideally I'd like that list to contain at least 5 podfics :-) I will also add a link to one podfic I made in that month that I'm proud of (provided I've made some!) because, why not.

Recs for May 2020

Rec #1: Ravens in Winter, by Luzula_Podfic
Fandom: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke, Gilbert Norrell/The Raven King, 25 mins
This was my first time listening to Luzula's works and I'm so excited she has other fandoms I recognise as her voice is simply wonderful to listen to. Just like in the novel, there are a lot of footnotes in this podfic, and I was impressed by how Luzula handled them in audio form.

Rec #2: After Farpoint, by Thimblerig
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Data/Tasha Yar, 11 mins
Thimblerig's podfics all sound so professional, and this one is no different. Her pacing is wonderful and her voice acting is really inspiring. The original fic is a relatively calm, sweet moment between Data and Tasha, and Thimblerig's reading of it really adds to it.

Rec #3: In From the Rain, by aethel
Fandom: The Book of Mormon, Elder McKinley/Elder Price, 7 mins
I was chuffed to see this fic podficced and even more chuffed by how beautifull aethel reads. I hope she reads more for this fandom. This podfic also introduced me to the BBC Sound Effects website, which I've sinced used for similarly watery sounds.

Rec #4: Proceed to the Route, by gracicah
Fandom: Original Work, 7 mins
A short, spooky listen that I really enjoyed. Gracicah's voice is such a good match for the spookiness, as it really lures you into feeling comfortable... then the creepy happenings grab you and won't let you go! I've also just remembered that this is tagged as gracicah's first podfic! Amazing.

Rec #5: A Hundred Echoes, by chimeraspeak and tinypinkmouse
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Data & Deanna Troi, 24 mins
This has been a favourite of mine for a while. I'm amazed by how in-character both Data and Deanna are, and how beautifully it's read. Data and Deanna are my favourite characters from TNG, and this fic/podfic (created as part of the [community profile] pod_together challenge) sends them on quite the adventure. It's well worth a listen.

May Self-rec

Seeing as this was my first month making podfic, I'm pleased with most of the podfics I created because I'm really enjoying this new medium and new way of interacting with fandom. My [community profile] podfic_bingo card has been really encouraging and inspired me to record fics outside of my comfort zone (like collaborating with friends, and dipping my toe into fandoms I don't know.) I've also been watching lots of tutorials on YouTube for the software I use, and with each podfic I make, I feel like I'm getting better. It might be because I'm messing up less while reading so have less to edit, I'm learning how to pronounce words I've only ever read in my head before, I'm finding new ways to edit audio to make it sound less-tinny, or I'm just getting used to hearing my own voice and not hating it! Taking all that into consideration, I think my self-rec for May has to be:

Somewhere You Belong
Fandom: The Book of Mormon, Elder McKinley/Elder Price, 25 mins
I was so excited to read this fic as it's a favourite of mine, and I actually enlisted the help of a friend to record it at first (the lovely [personal profile] saturni_stellis, who worked with me on my first podfic collab and is amazing at accents.) We shared the mic, her leaning in to play McKinley and other Mormon elders (while encouraging me to try an American accent, which... uh, didn't quite work!), while I was Kevin and the devil. Well, it was a disaster! The initial recording was over an hour long and the sound levels were all over the place. There were noises getting in the way, with us accidentally knocking the mic or rustling about. It would've taken me forever to edit and probably wouldn't have sounded very good, so I decided to record it solo instead. I learned a lot making this podfic! I'm really happy with how it turned out in the end, even if the characters don't have American accents(!) I got a lovely comment from the original author too, so I'm pleased as punch :-)
