Snowflake Challenge 14
Feb. 21st, 2021 06:24 pmI’m super late completing this
snowflake_challenge challenge, but I’m here and it still counts, so here we go!
Challenge Fourteen: Remix an existing work into a new media, and/or rec three or more remixes that do the same
I love this challenge, and I’m doing both: remixing via podficcing and recommending three remixes made of my stuff. I used the previous Snowflake challenge “Share a Wish List” to find participants asking for podfic of their works. People asking for podfic was also a wish on my list, so I’m enjoying the serendipity there :-)
Remix an existing work into a new media
I chose to podfic the delightful Superpower AU fic “Hug your destiny” [Cabin Pressure] by Hannah, who asked for podfic of their works for Snowflake’s “Share a Wish List” challenge. Here’s my journal post about the podfic with a link to where you can listen.
If you’re new to podfic, the original story’s text is linked at the “Inspired by” link on AO3.
Rec three or more remixes that do the same
I’m rec’ing remixes made from my works, all different mediums, one of which I’ve been eager to share here – I thought I’d missed my chance (as it’s been a while) but this challenge has given me the impetus to do it. Thanks again, Snowflake!
ONE: Illustrations of my fic, ‘Finishing (Touches)’ [Night at the Museum, Jedediah/Octavius]
At the beginning of December 2020, I was lucky enough to have someone illustrate one of my fics out of the blue. The artist, airborneranger63, shared six pieces with me and I was so blown away I added them into the text alongside their corresponding scenes. I’m sharing three of them here, and per Snowflake guidelines, I’ve included image descriptions below each image too. You can click them to see them fullszie!

Image description: Octavius stands before a computer monitor that illuminates the scene, one foot on the keyboard’s edge while prodding its keys with a pencil eraser. The screen reads “Moogle” and entered into its search bar is “figurine paint.”

Image description: Octavius helping Jedediah out of a shadowy car. The text reads “Follow me, and by sunrise, you’ll be the man you used to be again.”

Image description: Octavius holding Jedediah’s wrist in one hand, a paintbrush dipped in blue paint in his other. Jedediah’s sleeve has a patch missing and Jedediah has a tear in his eye. Behind them stands an open pot of figurine paint. The text reads: “Do you trust me?” “Yea…” “Then there is no need for concern.”
I still feel blessed every time I look at these. I love that the artist included their own visualisations of things in the story, whether they were defined by me or not – the Moogle joke, the car, the pot of paint with its hex code, Jed’s little tear. I also love the dramatic lighting!
I hope you enjoyed looking at these as much as I do. The whole set are on Tumblr here.
TWO: Podfic of my fic ‘Early Days’ [Star Trek: The Next Generation, Data & Lore & Noonian Soong]
I mentioned this podfic briefly in an earlier Snowflake challenge, but I’m eager to do so again!
This beautiful podfic of one of my works was gifted to me as part of last year’s Unconventional Fanworks Exchange. The story features a thunderstorm, and the podficcer (do_it_to_julia) included storm and rain sounds throughout the scene, which I loved – it inspired me to do the same for a podfic I recorded for a different fandom, too! There is also music throughout, all orchestral pieces from Star Trek: TNG.
Those added elements really bring the scenes to life, though it’s not only that. Do_it_to_julia’s voice is, in my opinion, perfect for this kind of fluffy story. Listening to it is always a magical experience for me. It’s like being read a bedtime story by a loving friend. I hope you enjoy it if you listen!
THREE: Mood board inspired by my podfic, on AO3 here
This mood board was created as part of Voice Team by my teammate, WoollyLambda, and was a wonderful surprise. I like the layers to this remix. I podficced the original story and made a moodboard-style cover for it, then WoollyLambda made a moodboard inspired by the podfic! There's no image description at the AO3 link, so I've included one here.
Image description: a nine-panel mood board of images: a marble statue of Julius Caesar; a globe and leather-bound books behind glass; a man in a cowboy hat bathed in light; brown boots; a bruised, bloodshot eye; a busy gallery interior; two people intimately close, one touching the other’s cheek; a cowboy hat, compass, and map atop a wooden bureau; a bust in a museum’s sculpture room with the upper half of its head missing.
